“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)

Bible Story:
Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35–41)
Devotional:
I know what it feels like when the storm is inside my own mind.
Because I live with bipolar disorder, I know what it feels like to struggle to calm my mind. I remember a night when my thoughts were racing so fast that I could not sleep or sit still. I was frightened, and I couldn’t make my mind slow down. Somewhere in the middle of it, I opened my Bible. I could barely take in the words, but I held on to them because I needed to know I wasn’t alone.
That night didn’t end with every thought suddenly becoming quiet. I still needed care and support. But I remember a small moment of peace, a reminder that God had not left me in the middle of what I was experiencing.
Your storm may look different from mine. You may be carrying grief, fear, anxiety, or regret. You may be fighting an addiction, or you may have asked God to forgive a sin only to find yourself returning to the same struggle. Whatever the cause, most of us know what it feels like to want peace while our minds remain restless.
In Mark 4, the disciples were terrified as waves crashed into their boat. Jesus was there, even while they were afraid. When they woke Him, He spoke to the wind and the water, and the storm became still.
I used to wonder whether having enough faith meant I should be able to quiet my mind. My own experience has taught me that I can’t always do that. Isaiah’s words don’t mean that we have failed at faith because we are still struggling. Trusting God doesn’t mean that we never feel shaken. It means that even when we feel unsteady, we can keep turning toward the One who remains steady.
Sometimes turning toward God looks like opening your Bible or Bible app. Sometimes it means protecting your sleep, taking your medication, or telling someone you need help. It may mean attending support groups, speaking with a counselor, asking for prayer, or being honest about a struggle. God can meet us in those moments, too.
If your mind feels like a storm today, you don’t have to pretend it’s calm. Bring what’s happening to Jesus, and reach for the support you need. He’s with you in the boat.
Reflection:
- When have you felt God’s presence during a difficult season?
- Is there a thought, fear, or struggle you want to bring to Him today?
- Who can you reach out to when you need support?
- What helps you remember that God is near, even when you do not feel at peace?

Prayer:
Lord, You know how frightening it can be when my thoughts will not slow down and peace feels out of reach. Remind me that I am not alone. Help me continue turning toward You, accept the care and support I need, and recognize Your presence even before the storm passes. Amen.
